SAMM for
Windows
(NOTE:
Some browsers require that you right-click the download link and
select the equivalent of "Save Target As" on the menu that pops
up.)
If you want to download S.A.M.M.
for Windows 2.0, click
here
.
If you already use S.A.M.M. for
Windows version 1.x and you want to upgrade to version 2.0, click
here
.
If you are a S.A.M.M. for DOS user
who is planning to upgrade to S.A.M.M. for Windows and you want
to download a program which will convert your old data files (so
you don't lose any of your old information), click
here
. (For installation and configuration
information, click
here
.)
It is recommended that you have
a blank, formatted 3.5" floppy disk handy for the installation.
To save time (and to keep all of
the files together) S.A.M.M. comes as a self-extracting archive.
When you're done downloading the
file called winsmshp.exe you'll want to unpack it.
- If you're using Win 3.1,
go to the 'File' menu in Program Manager and choose
'Run...'.
If you're using Win95/98, go to the 'Start' menu
and choose 'Run...'
- Click 'Browse' and then
locate the winsmshp.exe file that you downloaded.
- Click 'Okay'. After a
moment you'll see the 'WinZip Self-Extractor'.
- This is where it's handy
to have a blank, formatted 3.5" diskette--you're about
to make the installation disk for WinSAMM.) Near the top
of this window, you'll see the words 'Extract to:'. This
is the disk that will contain the files you're about to
extract. Change it to whatever drive and
directory you prefer. The easiest thing to do is to change
it to A: and unpack it onto a floppy. (Now matter where
you put it, make a note of the location because you'll need
it later.) When you're ready, click 'Start'.
- If everything worked
properly, you'll get a message telling you that the files
unpacked succesfully. Click 'OK' to acknowledge the message.
- Now you're ready to
install S.A.M.M. for Windows. If you're using Win3.1, go
to the 'File' menu in Program Manager and choose 'Run...'.
If you're using Win95/98, go to the 'Start' menu
and choose 'Run...'.
- Type 'A:SETUP.EXE' (without
the quotes) and press [ENTER]. (If you unzipped
winsmshp.exe to a different directory, substitute
that for the A:.)
- From here, the S.A.M.M.
for Windows installer will take over. Follow the prompts
on screen until S.A.M.M. for Windows is completely installed.
When that's done, you'll have a new program group called
WinSAMM. Inside you'll see an icon that looks like a quill
pen. Double click on that you'll be running S.A.M.M.
for Windows.
SAMM has plenty of on-line help.
Just press the F1 key or any of the convenient 'Help' buttons. Also,
use the 'Help' menu to look at the 'Help Contents'. Follow the link
marked 'Getting Started'.
NOTE: There seems to be some sort of problem installing
SAMM on some Windows XP machines. I've not been able to reproduce
this. The best thing to do is simply copy all of the files from the
install disk to a directory and manually create an icon for WinSAMM. The
program itself runs very well under Windows XP.
SAMM for Windows FAQ
- Why
is S.A.M.M. free?
S.A.M.M. is my small gift to the on-line writing
community. Despite the fact that every new writer
is a potentional competitor, I've always found writers
to be generous with advice and inspiration. S.A.M.M. is
offered freely in that same spirit.
I'm also hoping S.A.M.M. will be an incentive for
people to visit the Sandbaggers' WebSite. For
that reason, you may not redistribute copies of S.A.M.M.
via any mass means including other web sites, catalogs, or
on-line services. (If you're a Web Master and you think your
guests would be interested in S.A.M.M., please provide a link
to the Sandbaggers' Home Page.)
If you download S.A.M.M. and find it useful,
please drop me a note. I'd love to hear from you.
- H
ow can I back-up my data files?
In the world of computers, there are two kinds of
people--those who have lost data already and
those who will lose data in the future.
Since the data you store in S.A.M.M. could
represent years worth of information, you'll want to
back it up regularly. Copy the SAMMDAT2.TPS file
from the WinSAMM directory to a diskette. Then, if something
should happen to S.A.M.M., reinstall it and then copy the
back-up of the SAMMDAT2.TPS file back into the WinSAMM
directory.
- What
if S.A.M.M. doesn't have the Event Type I want?
When you enter a new Event into S.A.M.M., you
have to choose an Event Type from the list that pops
up. So, what do you do if the Event Type you want isn't
on the list?
The simplest way to add a new Event Type is to
simply enter it in the blank. S.A.M.M. will recognize
it as a new type and ask if you want to add it. Follow the
prompts and the new Event Type will be added to the list.
Alternatively, you can go to the 'Utilities' menu
and select 'Maintain "Type" Lists'.
- What
if S.A.M.M. doesn't have the Manuscript Type I want?
When you enter a new Manuscript into S.A.M.M.,
you have to choose a Manuscript Type from the list
that pops up. So, what do you do if the Manuscript Type
you want isn't on the list?
The simplest way to add a new Manuscript Type is
to simply enter it in the blank. S.A.M.M. will
recognize it as a new type and ask if you want to add it.
Follow the prompts and the new Manuscript Type will be added
to the list.
Alternatively, you can go to the 'Utilities' menu
and select 'Maintain "Type" Lists'.
- How
can I store expenses in S.A.M.M.?
Among other things, S.A.M.M. can keep track of
the expenses and earnings associated with your manuscripts.
When you enter a new Event, any number in the
'Amount' blank will automatically be added to the
total for the current Manuscript. If you want to enter an
expense (say the cost of postage to submit a manuscript) enter
it as a negative number in the Amount blank.
If you use the dates feature in 'Search Events'
feature, you can have S.A.M.M. add up all of your
expenses and earnings for a particular period of time.
- Why
are there check marks in my Event list?
When you enter information about an Event, you
can put a check in the Alert box and ask S.A.M.M.
to give you a reminder. To help you see which Events have
Alerts, S.A.M.M. puts a check mark in front of them in the
Event list.
- Why
are some of my Events displayed in yellow?
Any Event which has an Alert set is displayed
with a check mark in front of it on the Event List.
If the date of the Alert has arrived (or passed) then that
Event is highlighted in yellow.
- How
can I prevent S.A.M.M. from automatically checking for
alerts?
By default, S.A.M.M. automatically scans for
pending alerts every time you start it up. However,
you can change that if you'd like.
Go the to the 'Utilities' menu and select
'Preferences...'. On the screen that appears, take the
check mark out of 'Check ALERTS when SAMM starts' and the
click 'OK' to close the window.
NOTE: If you have removed the check mark from
'Check ALERTS when SAMM starts', S.A.M.M. will no longer
check the alerts for you. You'll have to click on the 'Alerts'
button when you want S.A.M.M. to check for them.
- How
far ahead does S.A.M.M. check for alerts?
By default, S.A.M.M. only considers today when
checking the alerts. (Any alert set for today or
before will be displayed.) However, you can change that
if you'd like.
Go to the 'Utilities' menu and select
'Preferences...'. On the screen that appears, use the up
and down arrows to change the number in the 'Number of days
SAMM should look ahead for alerts' box. You can tell S.A.M.M.
to check for alerts up to seven days in the future.
- How
can I make S.A.M.M. print without previewing first?
By default, S.A.M.M. automatically previews all
reports before sending them to your printer. However,
you can change that if you'd like.
Go the to the 'Utilities' menu and select
'Preferences...'. On the screen that appears, take the
check mark out of 'Preview reports before printing' and
the click 'OK' to close the window.
NOTE: If you have the preview reports feature
turned off, you'll never know how long your report is
before you print it. Depending on how much information you've
entered into S.A.M.M., some of the reports can be very long.
